We stand for women leaders

Let's #EmbraceEquity & level the playing field

It’s International Women’s Day and at Paula’s Choice, we’re not just woman-founded we're women-led. For us it’s a given that women get the job done just as well as anyone else. Now, it’s about creating the space for women to access these opportunities just as easily. This year, the theme of International Women’s Day is #EmbraceEquity. We have decided to use our platform to raise awareness on equity and learn how we can cultivate a more equitable world, because Paula’s Choice has always been about championing transparency and objectivity in the beauty industry. We take that same approach when it comes to gender discrimination.

Most of us know how it feels to be overshadowed, undermined, or simply dismissed. So it’s crucial to show unity in this struggle; when we all speak at once, we're not so easily spoken over.

Paula’s Choice is proud to advocate for women, day in day out. But in the world today, words can only carry a movement so far. As a first step, we're putting our words into action. After careful research, we've selected the WONDER Foundation, a women-led charity dedicated to providing quality education to girls in communities across the globe. Based on our own mission to uncover the truth in skincare, we're proud to support women's right to education and promote equity in education to create more women leaders in the future, with a donation of € 5.000 from Paula's Choice Europe to the WONDER Foundation in celebration of International Women's Day.

THE TRUTH IS

We don’t all start from the same place in life

Hear from our colleague Sally (Marketing & PR Executive):
“To me, equity in the workplace means that all employees are provided with fair and equal opportunities based on their individual needs.”

Equality vs. Equity

At the Paula’s Choice offices, we've been discussing the differences between equality and equity:

Equality strives for giving the same opportunities to all people, regardless of their gender, race, age, sexual orientation, disability, economic status or background.

Equity goes further than equality. Equity recognises that we don't all share the same starting line. Therefore we have to take individual circumstances into account. Equity isn't about making the opportunity open to all, but about making sure everyone can reach that opportunity in the first place.

What we think of equity in the workplace

Hiromi (Business Developer)

"Every[time] I achieved something often people would say 'you got the opportunity because you are a lady'. It was very sad to feel that you are not appreciated or seen for who you are inside ... I am happy to work in a company [now] where I can be who I am inside and out. I am proud to be Asian female in [a] European company but I am more proud that I am just 'Hiromi' nothing more nothing less."

Sally (Marketing & PR Executive)

"My mother immigrated to the Netherlands 30 years ago, without knowing the language and with only a high school diploma. She has been working in factories, because she did not have many other options. Her employers never gave her the opportunity to take courses or trainings to develop herself ... Education and experience is important to consider when hiring an employee. However, if a company wants to bring in people today who will be successful tomorrow, hiring for potential and investing in people is even more important."

Sophie (Team Lead Content)

"I am aware of [my] privilege and I think I still have a lot to learn and for certain there’s a bias that I still need to work on. What I learned is that equity doesn’t mean equal chances for everyone, it means actually raising the bar and going the extra mile for those less fortunate or privileged. Recognising that we don’t all start from the same place. In the workplace this goes from recruitment to salary to (office) accessibility and beyond. If you think about it, there should be awareness literally everywhere."
